+ weekly list of handpicked startup events for founders and investors in London

We all start somewhere

We live in the times where it’s difficult to recognize our own achievements when there is always someone who achieved more. The social media is packed with people portraying success.

We mostly notice the stories of startups raising millions or being acquired. More and more founders each year get on Forbes 30 under 30.

And even if we understand that it’s just highlights of any story or tip of the iceberg hiding years of grinding (and partially luck), our brain is wired to benchmark ourselves against these, not necessarily real, stories. It makes us to ignore our own achievements, discounting them to being not significant enough to celebrate or be proud of.

Many of you know about my conference last week. People keep telling me how much of a success it was. But for me it was just another day, nothing special. I was obviously glad it was not a failure, but I was not necessarily ecstatic about it.

And then I got a message from one of my uni friends. We both went to the same uni in Siberia (6 hours flight from Moscow), and I’m originally from a small village 4 hours' drive from the city I went to uni to.

His message says: “Dude, you came from Siberia, from the middle of nowhere. You live in London now, people know you, and you just had 800 top-notch people who spent their time and money to attend something you created. Back in the uni the only thing we knew about London was that it was the capital of Great Britain!”.

My journey to where I am today is remarkable, so is YOURS! Look at what you achieved today and be proud of yourself. Forbes is still there and there is plenty of time to get on the list even if you missed the boat on 30 under 30!
